UC Berkeley Biostatistics Professor Nicholas Jewell Appointed to National Academy of Medicine

University of California, Berkeley Biostatistics Professor Nicholas Jewell has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). In addition to being a prestigious honor for his groundbreaking work, Jewell’s appointment demonstrates the value of statistics in the field of medicine and the importance of professionals with data analysis skills in helping to educate policymakers and consumers on sound, scientific approaches to public policy.

Jewell was chosen for research and contributions to the broad field of medicine. His experience includes studying conditions and diseases such as HIV/AIDS, SARs, Dengue Fever, and Zika. One of 80 new appointees, Jewell will contribute to NAM reports about a variety of health issues affecting the country.

The author of two books—Statistics for Epidemiology and Causal Inference in Statistics: A Primer—Jewell is a fellow of the ASA, the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He completed the Harkness Fellowship at UC Berkeley and Stanford University and earned both his PhD in mathematics and BA in applied mathematics from the University of Edinburgh.
