Kathryn Roeder Elected Member of National Academy of Sciences

The ASA congratulates Carnegie Mellon University Statistics and Computational Biology Professor Kathryn Roeder for her election to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). She is among 100 new NAS members and 25 foreign associates being recognized for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

Roeder has also been recognized by the statistical community. She is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and Institute of Mathematical Statistics and has received the COPSS Presidents’ Award for outstanding statistician under age 40, the Snedecor Award for outstanding work in statistical applications, and the Janet L. Norwood Award for outstanding achievement by a woman in statistical sciences.

In a personal statement on her website, Roeder explains that she began her career as a biologist but found the questions that interested her could only be answered by solving an even more intriguing statistical puzzle. “Thus,” she states, “my career path veered into statistics.”
