Cressie, Mengersen Elected to Australian Academy of Science

Noel Cressie and Kerrie Mengersen were elected to the Australian Academy of Science, two of only 20 fellows elected in 2018.

Mengersen was cited for her internationally recognized contributions to Bayesian statistics. Noting her dual focus on statistical methodology and its application and methodological contributions to Bayesian theory, methodology, and computation, the citation noted her contributions to substantive problems in health, environment, and industry. The academy also emphasized her leadership ability and passion for developing young researchers in statistics and the applied sciences.

 

 

Cressie’s citation highlighted him as being a “world leader in statistical methodology for analyzing spatial and spatio-temporal data and its applications to environmental science.” It stated, “His fundamental contributions changed the basic paradigm for analyzing observations in space and space-time.” The academy also mentioned Cressie’s work on pollution monitoring, climate prediction, ocean health, soil chemistry, and glacier movement. A NASA science team member for the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 mission, Cressie has made ground-breaking innovations for big data analytics for remote-sensing and climate change.
