Third Annual Workshop for Chairs of Programs in Statistics and Biostatistics

On Saturday, August 1 prior to JSM, the Caucus of Academic Representatives will hold the third annual workshop for Chairs of Programs in Statistics and Biostatistics. This one-day workshop is designed to provide information and discussion for leaders of statistics and biostatistics groups and departments. In particular, it will try to stimulate discussion between new and experienced chairs on a range of topics as broad as development of long-range planning goals to topics as specific as recommendations for dealing with the media.

Agenda items that will be of particular interest to new chairs include intra-university collaborations (working with other department chairs and with the administration), administrative activities (faculty reviews, budgets), and working with the department's administrative staff. For more experienced chairs there will be sessions on recruiting students to the profession of statistics, diversity issues, developing statistics programs for majors outside of statistics, and research and funding trends at NSF and NIH.

NOTE: This Workshop will be held in Alexandria, Virginia, at ASA headquarters, NOT at the DC Convention Center.

In order to keep registration fees reasonable, the Caucus is providing partial support for this Workshop. There will be a registration fee of $150 per participant to partially cover the cost of travel for the speakers and for food. (This is in addition to and separate from JSM registration). Registration includes a dinner on Friday evening. For those interested, hotels near ASA will be booked by ASA staff in order to get reduced rates. Hotels near the DC Convention Center should be booked through the JSM meeting site. Registration for the workshop is available online on the Caucus web site. Space is limited and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Program Committee for this workshop is Jim Albert, Rod Little, Chris Morrell, Bob Taylor and Doug Wolf. ASA liaison is Keith Crank. Please address questions to albertcb1@gmail.com or keith@amstat.org.
