Statistics in Chemistry Award
The Statistics in Chemistry Award was established in 1990 to recognize outstanding collaborative endeavors between statisticians and chemists. The award is sponsored by the Chemometrics Committee of the ASA Section on Physical and Engineering Sciences, which solicits annual donations from key industrial and manufacturing companies.
Each award recipient receives an engraved award and shares a cash prize. The amount of the cash prize varies, depending on available funds.
The Statistics in Chemistry Award is bestowed upon a distinguished individual or individuals based on their innovative use of statistics to solve a problem in chemistry and the impact of the solution on the problem. In odd-numbered years, the award is presented for a paper published in refereed statistics, chemistry, or chemometrics journals during the previous two years. In even-numbered years, the award is presented for work between a statistician and chemist in an industrial/manufacturing company performed during the previous two years. A statistician, to be eligible for the award, must be a member of the ASA.
Nomination, Award, and Lecture Dates
Nominations are due by March 9 each year. If the deadline date falls on a weekend, nominations will be accepted through the Monday following the due date. The award is presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings in August of the same year.
Responsibilities of the Award Recipient
The award recipient is responsible for providing a current photograph and general personal information the year the award is presented. The American Statistical Association uses this information to publicize the award and prepare the prize(s).
How to Submit a Nomination
Nomination letters, along with six copies of the publication(s), should be sent to the chair of the Statistics in Chemistry Award committee. Unpublished work should be described in a format similar to a published paper. Nomination letters and publications may be submitted through the mail or email.
2011: Thomas Brendan Murphy, Nema Dean, and Adrian E. Raftery for their paper "Variable Selection and Updating In Model-Based Discriminant Analysis for High Dimensional Data with Food Authenticity Applications" published in Annals of Applied Statistics, 4(1):396-421. This award recognizes outstanding collaborative endeavors between statisticians and chemists for their innovative use of statistics to solve a problem in chemistry. This paper clearly identified a real-world problem in food chemistry and developed a statistical methodology that provides a practical solution.
